2010 Scholarship Winners

On Tuesday June 8, 2010, during the Jazz Jam at the Sunrise Theatre’s Black Box, the Fort Pierce Jazz and Blues Society awarded its semi-annual $1,000 merit scholarships to five very talented high school graduates from local area schools.  The students took to the stage and, joined by the Fort Pierce Jazz Ensemble, they delighted the audience with their performances.

The scholarships went to:

Hutchison *Jonathan E. Hutchison*, High Honors graduate of Treasure Coast High School, who plays trumpet, fluegel horn, euphonium/baritone, trombone, saxophone, piano, and mallet percussion, rendered a soulful, poignant version of Hoagy Carmichael’s popular tune “The Nearness of You”. He is attending IRSC and his major is Music Education.
Blouin

*Krysten Maria Blouin*, an honor roll graduate of St. Lucie West Centennial High, plays trumpet, drums, keyboards and guitar.  Krysten brought the tempo up and wowed us with her rendition of “Blue Bossa” written by Kenny Dorham.  She will be attending Southeastern University, then the University of South Florida, pursuing a Music Education Degree.

Church

*Megan Turick-Church*, a graduate of Port St. Lucie High charmed us with her version of “Only In New York” from Thoroughly Modern Millie (in which Megan played the lead).  She is an amazing singer, actress and dancer, who is enrolled at Nova Southeastern University this Fall and will have a double major: Musical Theater and Law. She is currently playing the lead in The Sound Of Music at Port St. Lucie High School.

LeBon

Trombonist  *John  Paul LeBon* could not attend the awards ceremony.  He was at FSU freshman orientation, where he will major in Music Education. John Paul is an honors graduate of Port St. Lucie High.  His award was received by his father.

Ostarly

A special $1,000 scholarship was awarded in the name of deceased Musician and Jazz Society member Tom Omans, and was presented by his family. The award went to *Walter N. Ostarly, III*, a graduate of Lincoln Park Academy, an accomplished clarinetist, who also plays saxophone, flute, piano and guitar. Walter enchanted us with his rendition of Glenn Miller’s tune “Moonlight Serenade.”  He will attend IRSC prior to seeking a Masters Degree in music at Juilliard.

Each year the Jazz Society awards merit scholarships to worthy area high school graduate musicians and singers, who have displayed high academic achievement, good citizenship and promising musicianship. Plans are being undertaken by the Jazz Society to establish an ongoing scholarship fund for deserving awardees who continue to show superior achievement in their college careers. Scholarships are funded by memberships in the Jazz Society and from revenues earned from the Saturday Morning Arts and Crafts Market in Ft. Pierce, which is managed by the Jazz Society.  In addition to scholarships, winners received a year’s membership to the Ft. Pierce Jazz and Blues Society.
