2010 Scholarship Winners
On Tuesday June 8, 2010, during the Jazz Jam at the Sunrise Theatre’s Black Box, the Fort Pierce Jazz and Blues Society awarded its semi-annual $1,000 merit scholarships to five very talented high school graduates from local area schools. The students took to the stage and, joined by the Fort Pierce Jazz Ensemble, they delighted the audience with their performances.

Musician and Jazz Society member
Tom Omans,
and was presented by his family. The award went to
*Walter
N. Ostarly, III*,
a graduate of Lincoln Park Academy, an accomplished clarinetist, who
also plays saxophone, flute, piano and guitar. Walter enchanted us with
his rendition of Glenn Miller’s tune “Moonlight Serenade.”
He will attend IRSC prior to seeking a Masters Degree in music at
Juilliard. |
Each year the Jazz Society awards merit scholarships to worthy area high school
graduate musicians and singers, who have displayed high academic achievement,
good citizenship and promising musicianship. Plans are being undertaken by the
Jazz Society to establish an ongoing scholarship fund for deserving awardees who
continue to show superior achievement in their college careers. Scholarships are
funded by memberships in the Jazz Society and from revenues earned from the
Saturday Morning Arts and Crafts Market in Ft. Pierce, which is managed by the
Jazz Society. In addition to scholarships, winners received a year’s
membership to the Ft. Pierce Jazz and Blues Society.
